Abstract:
\r\n Needs analysis (NA) in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is foundational to curriculum and syllabus development, enabling instructors to design instruction tailored to the specific linguistic, professional, and contextual demands of learners. However, despite its pivotal role, the process of conducting an effective NA remains fraught with methodological, contextual, and practical challenges and, while identifying relevant variables in NA has been well-theorized, interpreting these variables accurately and meaningfully is still a considerable obstacle. This article explores the major difficulties associated with conducting NA in ESP, drawing upon theoretical frameworks, empirical studies, and practitioner insights and delves into the hardships educators and curriculum designers face in interpreting variables such as learner characteristics, target situation demands, contextual and stakeholder expectations, and sociocultural influences. Drawing on a critical review of existing literature and theoretical models, the study highlights the multidimensional complexity of NA interpretation and suggests methodological strategies to mitigate these difficulties. The paper identifies and examines issues related to methodological design, stakeholder engagement, access to authentic data, temporal constraints, and the interpretive complexity of multifaceted learner needs. The paper argues for a dynamic, triangulated, and context-sensitive approach to interpreting NA data, emphasizing the importance of reflexivity and stakeholder engagement in effective ESP course design.
